Subsea tools for fault-finding, construction & decommissioning
The integrity of electrical power circuits is vital to the safe and efficient production of oil and gas from subsea wells worldwide. A major challenge for designers and operators of subsea electro-hydraulic control systems is preventing seawater from contacting copper conductors within umbilicals, flying leads, and connectors an issue that can jeopardize both production and personnel safety. Given the high risks of operating electrical equipment underwater, it is essential to continuously monitor insulation integrity, measured as Insulation Resistance (IR) in Ohms, and respond promptly to any detected faults. Recognizing the critical importance of maintaining IR, Viper Innovations has made significant investments in developing advanced IR monitoring and recovery technologies. This effort has led to the creation of state-of-the-art line insulation monitoring hardware (V-LIMs) and an innovative passivation technology (V-LIFE) that restores IR in failed circuits solutions now trusted by over 30 operators in more than 150 subsea applications worldwide.
Viper Innovations has developed pioneering technologies to enhance electrical integrity across critical industries. Originally created through a Joint Industry Project (JIP) with major oil and gas operators such as BP, Shell, Chevron, and Total, our enabling technology was designed to provide electrical integrity data at a cable-section level within distributed power networks for subsea control systems. In 2016, Network Rail approached us with similar challenges in their signalling power supplies, leading to the development of CableGuardian a groundbreaking solution for the rail industry. This successful technology transfer earned us the 2018 Intelligent Systems Innovation Award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a recognition of our commitment to innovation and reliability.
